In August last year, Microsoft announced that it plans to end Microsoft 365 support for Internet Explorer 11 on August 17, 2021. Microsoft today released a timetable for ending support for Internet Explorer in Windows 10.

Microsoft To End Internet Explorer

According to a new blog post from Microsoft, the Redmond Giant will stop using Internet Explorer on most Windows 10 versions on June 15, 2022. The company clarified that this review has no impact on Windows 10 LTSC or Server IE 11 and MSHTML desktop applications. Engine (Trident).

Microsoft details the platforms affected by this comment in a separate article. After June next year, Microsoft will no longer support IE 11:

  • Internet Explorer 11 desktop application delivered via the Semi-Annual Channel (SAC):
    • Windows 10 client SKUs (version 20H2 and later)
    • Windows 10 IoT (version 20H2 and later)

And the retirement doesn’t affect the following platforms as of now:

  • IE mode in Microsoft Edge
  • IE platform (MSHTML/Trident), including WebOC
  • Internet Explorer 11 desktop application on:
    • Windows 8.1
    • Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU)
    • Windows 10 Server SAC (all versions)
    • Windows 10 IoT Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) (all versions)
    • Windows 10 Server LTSC (all versions)
    • Windows 10 client LTSC (all versions)

Microsoft pointed out that improved compatibility, optimized performance, and better browser security are the main reasons for using Edge to replace IE. It is not surprising that Microsoft moved from IE to Edge, especially after switching to the Chromium engine completely. For most people, this is a painful time. It is the only way to access the Internet through Internet Explorer, but it is the only way to a secure Web ecosystem.
