iOS 15.1 now available for your iPhone, brings SharePlay and ProRes features

Apple has released iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1 as software updates that add new functionality to all compatible iPhones and iPads. SharePlay is one of them: it allows iPhone users to watch a movie, listen to music, and share their screens over a FaceTime conversation. SharePlay was included in one of the early beta versions of iOS 15 before it was released to the public, but Apple withheld it because it was not ready for release. ProRes video capture is another important feature, but it’s only accessible on iPhone 13 Pro versions.

If you have an iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max, updating to iOS 15.1 adds ProRes video capture, which allows you to record raw videos suitable for movies and high-quality videos. It records films in 1080p at 30 frames per second on 128GB devices and 4K at 30 frames per second on 256GB models. Keep in mind that this feature will take up a lot of room, so plan accordingly. The new Auto Macro option in iOS 15.1 allows you to turn off the automated macro mode if you don’t want to use it.

The Apple Wallet app now has the ability to keep your Covid vaccination card, albeit this feature is unlikely to be available in India. That’s because the government never agreed to share the APIs of its Aarogya Setu or Cowin applications with Apple or Google, which would have allowed Android and iOS users to get information about Covid more easily and without having to download separate apps. Android 12 has a similar feature, although it is not accessible in India.

If you own a HomePod, iOS 15.1 adds Dolby Atmos and Lossless Audio support to both the HomePod and the HomePod mini. This means that the music on your Apple smart speaker will now be of higher quality. New automation triggers have been added to the Home app, based on readings from humidity, air quality, and light level sensors connected to HomeKit. You can now ask Siri to play games in the Shortcuts app.

Apple has also addressed a number of issues. According to the release notes, the Photos app reported that the storage was full improperly, the weather app did not show the exact temperature of My Location and might display inappropriate backdrop colors, locking the iPhone would pause audio from an app, and more. You should no longer be bothered by these bugs.

In addition to everything else that the iOS 15.1 upgrade provides, the iPadOS 15 updates add support for Live Text in the Camera app. When you need to scan text with the camera, Live Text is a great function to have.

To begin downloading iOS 15.1, open the Settings app on your iPhone, then tap on General, then Software Update. Check to see if you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network, if your iPhone has enough battery life, and if you’ve backed up your data.
