The verification code is annoying, and we all agree that it is one of the worst parts of the Internet today. However, this feature is very important to avoid potential spam in bots and online services. In order to find the best location, Cloudflare is studying the use of key electronic hardware to prove that you are human.
Cloudflare password authentication
According to Cloudflare, it takes users at least 32 seconds to complete the CAPTCHA task. Assuming that the user clicks the verification code every 10 days, it means that about 500 man-years are wasted every day. In a recent blog post, Cloudflare detailed how the technology works.
According to the company, users can click on the “I am a human” message on a supported website and connect to the dongle security. Shortly thereafter, the encryption certificate is sent to Cloudflare and the user’s existence is verified.
When Cloudflare tested this data stream, it only took five seconds and three clicks. According to Cloudflare, you don’t have to worry about privacy issues because authentication has nothing to do with the user’s device. You are a member of the FIDO Alliance. The supported devices in the first version are YubiKey, HyperFIDO key and Thetis FIDO U2F key. If you have a supported security key, you can test this feature on this website.
“By offering a CAPTCHA alternative via a single touch backed by YubiKey hardware and public-key cryptography, Cloudflare’s Cryptographic Attestation of Personhood experiment could help further reduce the cognitive load placed on users as they interact with sites under strain or attack,” said Christopher Harrell, Chief Technology Officer at Yubico.
Cloudflare’s Crypto Personality Certification can be run on devices that support Web authentication API. The company says it can be used in all browsers on Windows, macOS, Ubuntu and iOS 14. Like Android, the features in Chrome can be used with phones with Android 10 and higher.
