Amazon’s Website Ranking Platform Alexa.com to Shut Down Next Year

Alexa.com, an Amazon-owned website rating platform, is well-known among those trying to maintain track of a website’s ranking and other metrics. Unfortunately, Amazon will shut down the platform next year, signaling the end of the platform.

Amazon Alexa.com Shutting Down in 2022

Alexa.com, which allows consumers to check website rankings and gain competitive analysis, will cease to exist on May 1, 2022, according to Amazon. After approximately 25 years, the service will be discontinued.

The official blog post reads, “Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us your go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, keyword research, and so much more.”

Amazon has also announced that it would no longer be issuing new Alexa.com memberships, but existing subscribers will be able to use the site until May 2022. Those who wish to use the website for the remaining months will be charged a subscription cost until April 1. People might also opt to remove their accounts at this time. Users can continue the process by submitting a support request for the account to be deleted. It’s best to make sure the subscription is canceled first.

Amazon has already begun to display a notice on the Alexa website informing consumers of the change. The Alexa website, for the uninitiated, allows users to track website rankings, traffic data, and more. Subscribing to the subscription model also gives consumers access to SEO tools and competition analyses.

While there’s no official word on why Amazon decided to shut down its nearly two-decade-old service, Semrush, an online visibility management tool, claims that Alexa.com’s organic traffic has plummeted in recent months. Perhaps the reason is that it has lost its large user base and popularity.
